Just finished my Hugo ballot (and just in time, because today is the deadline).

Yes, I voted Puppy-free.  That was the entire reason I got a voting membership.  If you would have liked to have voted a no-pups slate but did not have the disposable income to frivol on a voting membership, I invite you to join me in my personal No-Pup Vicarious Thrills Members' Circle!  Share in my act of defiance, even if it's only through a proxy.

No, I did not acquire or read anything on the Sad or Rabid Puppies' slates.  No, I don't feel any remorse whatsoever for voting against something I had not read.  That's what the pups do themselves (vote against things they won't read), and I've made the decision to do it back at them.  I'm years past the point of automatically doing the wrong thing for the "right" reason (and not just because of the number of times I have been thoroughly screwed over as a result of other people doing the wrong things, or failing to do the right things, for the "right" reason).  (Although that does counteract the potential for remorse even more thoroughly.)

I actually deviated from the no-pup ballot in one instance:  I really loved Guardians of the Galaxy, which was one of their nominees.  I was, in the end, unable to rank it below works that I genuinely thought were inferior -- and which were not the creative work of the Pupheads.

Now we wait to find out the results.  I'm hoping for a lot of unused rockets.  I had, at one point, been thinking that this might be a good year for me to actually attend -- I have never been to a Worldcon, although I've been to many others, it's in Washington state, I know a lot of the lovely folks running it this year -- and they actually asked me if I would maybe come? -- but once the canine excrement started coming down, I was glad I had not made the commitment.  I feel deeply sorry for my con-running friends and acquaintances, having to preside over this mare's nest.  I hope that everyone who attends, other than the Pups, has a truly wonderful time, stays healthy, gets enough to eat and enough sleep, meets wonderful people and generally rocks out that weekend.

Meanwhile, back here in the No-Pup Vicarious Thrills Members' Circle, the Save button has been pressed, and it's time for us to have a drink, or a cookie, or both.  What'll you have?

GNU Terry Pratchett

I've spent a good deal of time the last several days with Twitter open on a "Terry Pratchett" search, following a lot of links, reading many tributes, looking at fanart, occasionally posting things of my own.

Or, to put it another way, I've been participating in the global wake.  Because that's what it is.

So, I cracked the screen on my iPad.

Again.

I didn't actually buy the iPad:  it was issued to me at work, although it's pretty much mine.  I can put anything I want on it, I pay for the apps, and if -- um, when -- it gets damaged, I pay for the repairs.

After the second time I had to get a cracked screen fixed, I swore that if I ever did it again, I would buy a goddamned repair kit and learn to repair iThingummies myself.

Annnnd . . . I got a really good strong nice leather cover for it.  Annnnd after a very long time, the cover got a little worn and the spine softened, and, well.  The crackage wasn't all that bad.  I could still use the tablet.  For the present.  Unless/until the cracking spread.

I did a good-sized heap of research, ordered a toolkit, ordered a replacement screen, and girded my loins to Do the Deed today.

I DID IT.

My iPad works.  It has a fine new uncracked glass screen.  Total cost was $40, and half of that was the toolkit, which I can now use for future repairs.

I salute the lovely website ifixit.com, which did not hedge about the niggling difficulty, and walked me through every step in almost enough detail to make it truly smooth.  (Bumps do happen, but that's survivable.)  I did not rip out the wi-fi antenna, or damage the LCD screen, or snap the diogitizer cable, or otherwise screw up, although I did have to unscrew and rescrew the LCD screen four separate times while I figured out what I was supposed to do with the micro-cables.

1 - Missy and I watched the Agents of SHIELD premiere last night.  We were pretty underwhelmed, to be honest, so that isn't actually the positive thing.  After it ended, Missy asked, "Didn't we just get the new episode of Doctor Who?  Let's watch that now!"  (We get the new episodes through Nook Video, and they become available on Tuesdays.)  So we did, and it was WONDERFUL.

2 - It's now two months since we cut our cable.  Two months of our former cable bill is enough to cover the cost of the new equipment that made it possible (a digital antenna and a Roku streaming stick), with something left over for the content that we still have to pay for (new episodes of Doctor Who), and leaves something over for faster internet service.  Starting with next month, we'll officially be ahead!  And dear heavens I loooove it!  Just flipping off the cable companies makes me smirk.

3 - This evening after dinner, I sat and worked on new LOLMacs while Missy read to me.  She reads wonderfully, and she'd been saving an Avengers fic by scifigrl47 that I hadn't read.  Oh, domestic bliss of the deliciously fannish variety!  I'll get several evenings of this particular happy flavour, since it's a longish fic.

Bonus #4 - Along with the Roku stick, we got the following freebies:  two free months of Hulu Plus (has ads, boo), one free month of Netflix (no ads!  yay!!), and a credit at Movies to Go that we've only just now using up.  And I found out that I can watch MacGyver on Netflix on my iPad, which is so insanely fine that I have no words.  Is this really my life?

It seems that posting every day is beyond me, although posting positive things is not.  So this will take more than five days, but I figure that's acceptable.

1 - It rained today, with great enthusiasm.  I like rain anyway, especially around here, where it means cooler temperatures.  Instead of the high 80s and low 90s, it stayed in the low 80s during the day.  It's actually plunged all the way down to, gasp, 76 degrees right now!!

2 - With the rain and attendant electrical activity, the power went out at work at about 2 pm.  We get power outages all the freaking time, so every computer is on a battery backup, but the power blips are usually only a few minutes or even a few seconds.  This one just went on and on.  Eventually, I had to shut down the server (since its battery pack is not intended for long sustained support), and we all went home early.  I have to admit, I really loved going home early!  Especially on a Friday.

3 - Partly because I was able to leave early, I also got to the gym, for the first time this week.  (Usually I get there maybe three times, but being sick and tired interfered this week.)  I don't do a major workout -- I use the ellipticals, usually for half an hour to an hour, and read a book as I stride boldly along.  It was really good to get there again.  And it was raining again when I left, and nice and cool(ish)!

Bonus #4 - Fic Rush this weekend!  I'm too bleary to attempt to write this evening, but I have hopes for the rest of the weekend.  *crosses fingers*

. . . aka, What I Did While I Was Feeling Too Crappy to Do Anything Else.

I need to point out that this is a variation of the basic game that allows the game state to be saved (and re-loaded), and also allows the player to undo the most recent move.  Even so . . . yes, this is the highest score and* the highest level that it's physically possible to attain with this game.  And yes, it's damned difficult.  It took me about a month (playing this single game, that is).  It's theoretically possible to get this far playing the original version, without the Save Progress or Back features, but it's so statistically unlikely that it's effectively unattainable.

For those unfamiliar with the game:  the goal is to reach the 2048 tile, but it's understood that the code will allow you to go a lot farther.  This is how far.  Every tile is formed by smashing together two tiles of the next value down -- so you have to have two 2048s to make one 4096, two 4096s to make one 8192, etc.

I have to assume that others have done this,** but I haven't yet seen any images of a "perfect" game other than the one I just finished playing.

*ETA:  Turns out it's possible to squeeze a few thousand extra points out of the game, if you use more 2s to make your 4s.

**At least three other people had posted their actual scores for maxed-out games to a Reddit thread I found.  So, four out of several hundred thousand players . . . ?

I've been very quiet and not very responsive online the last few days, and I apologise -- I spent most of last week dealing with the Heartbleed bug and getting a new server installed at work.  Either of these by itself would have been a lively time.  And oh, yeah, it's tax season.

I know I've been that completely and utterly exhausted before, sometime in my life, but I can't actually remember it.  It was actually a very good week -- problems were resolved, the server went live with minimal bumps, our clients' data is safe -- but ZOMG, by 7 pm on Friday, I was so tired I wanted to cry.

I'll be doing a Tech Support Post on Heartbleed later today tomorrow, because Not Enough Brain today.  It's an ugly thing and everybody with an online presence needs to deal with it, but it's not as bad as originally feared, and I have some solid recommendations to make it easier.

First step for everyone:  CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS FOR FACEBOOK, TUMBLR, YAHOO, AND LIVEJOURNAL, NOW.  Don't wait.

Dear Overseas Tech Company:

Just a hint -- if you're trying to sell your tech-based services in the US, services involving social media and the internet and all that, you might want to, you know, look online for information about the prospects you're cold-calling (or cold-emailing, in this case).  Then you would know who to contact, instead of emailing one person and asking them at random.  You would even know what kind of business we do.

Another hint:  if you're trying to sell anything that occupies a place on the internet, there will be text involved.  You are not native speakers of American English, or any other kind of English for that matter.  You just might want to get your website proofread by a native speaker of the language of your target market, before anyone in that market goes and reads it and reaches a conclusion about your competence based on the appalling mess therein presented.  It's too late for me, but hey, there might be others.

Also, you really ought to remove the boilerplate text from your website.

And the editing notes -- you know, like the one that says "too vague" after one of your many, many bits of incredibly vague MarketingSpeak.

Also, hire an editor who's fluent in the language used on the website.  Oh, wait, that bit of advice is redundant.  But then, so's the text on your website.

Actually -- on second thought, don't change anything.  It only took me 90 seconds to eliminate you as a candidate for any business you might want to sell me, so that was actually very efficient.  Kind of a bad business model, though.

After I read up on the details of LJ's most recent clusterFubar, I wondered which cluster my own journal and comms were on.  (If you haven't read the gory details, or don't want to, the short version is:  LJ server cluster fall down go boom.  All journals connected to cluster fall over.  All journals connected to comms connected to cluster fall over.  Splat.)

Anyway.  Back to wondering which cluster I'm on.  It turns out that there's a lookup for that:  http://www.livejournal.com/misc/whereami.bml

So, Today I Learned:

[livejournal.com profile] lolmac and [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush are both on cluster 4, NewYorkStrip.

[livejournal.com profile] fic_rush_48 is on cluster 1, Steaksauce.

[livejournal.com profile] bethinexile is on cluster 8, Shishkabob.

[livejournal.com profile] rda_daily is on cluster 6, Filetmignon.

[livejournal.com profile] macgyverdeleted is on cluster 9, ChickenTikka.  This is one of the compromised clusters; the other one, where the problems started, is cluster 7, Bratwurst.

I have another comm on cluster 12, PorkRibs.  Older cluster names, which might not still be in use, are TBone, Roastbeef, Tofu, Porkchop, Madcow, and Porterhouse; and Soybean, which definitely is.  I detect a naming convention.

Much older names included Indigo, Santa, Cartman, and Chef, but these are probably no longer in use.  The post I found discussing this was originally started in 2002, so that was another epoch in LJ geological time.  I find myself wondering if the "Chef" cluster name got the current convention started.

So which cluster are you on?  Are we neighbours?  Can you dig up the names of any others?

ETA:  added to the menu:  cluster 3, Soybean, cluster 5, Hambone, cluster 10, EggRoll, cluster 11, Fajitas, and cluster 13, HotWings.  Still unknown:  2, (probably Porterhouse) and anything higher than 13, if indeed there are more than 13 clusters.

Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] miss_peg for filling out the list!

At this point, it seems likely that TBone, Roastbeef, Tofu, Porkchop and Madcow no longer exist as cluster names, so I needn't bother lamenting that [livejournal.com profile] lolmac isn't on the Tofu cluster.

How recently did you install an update to Java?

If your answer is "Last week" or "Last month" or "Huh?  What's that?" or, in fact, anything other than "Yesterday" or "Today", go thou and update.  Now.  Then come back here and I'll tell you why, but seriously, DON'T WAIT.

http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_xpi.jsp

It usually comes as a file named 'jxpiinstall.exe'.  The file will also offer to install the Ask toolbar: uncheck this and proceed.

After installation, go into your control panel and un-install any older versions of Java that might be lurking (Versions 6 or less). The patched version is Version 7 Update 7.

ETA:  link to all downloads:  http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp -- the Mac update is about mid-page.

So.  Why?

Explanations, mostly in English )

ETA4:  Oracle has released a patched version of Java 6:  it's Version 6 Update 35, and you can find it here.  This may be the best interim solution.  Unfortunately, it isn't available for the Mac.  If you want to go that route, uninstall Java 7, reboot, and then install 6.35.

Be safe, everyone.

Along with starting the Tumblr account for icanhastofu, I also set up a Google Analytics account, so I can track my traffic spy on fandom boost my ego with gratuitous details.  A few days ago, I enabled it on the LOLMac journal here on LJ as well, which is giving me a lovely lesson in international geography, a few giggles (someone ended up on LOLMac after Googling 'lolita', which must have been a disappointment) and a lot of squees.  I mean, wow!  There's someone in Romania who likes RDA and (presumably) enjoys the jokes!  Is that cool or what?

At the same time, the main section of my brain immediately starts fretting at the privacy implications.  Yeah, yeah, Google Analytics and web traffic tracking are ubiquitous.  You're tracked everywhere you go.  I opted into the Guest Tracking on LJ when it was first enabled -- but that's a two-way option:  if you want to see, you must allow yourself to be seen, and you know it's happening because you accepted it.  But still.  LOLMac is a great joy in my life, and it's a place where a lot of my friends hang out, and I don't want to squick anyone out by spying on them, as it were.

An offer you can't refuse, unless you want to )

Well, aughh.  I just discovered a weakness in the LJ tagging system -- apparently you can only page back 380 items in a given tag!  Given that, at present, I have over 400 items under the Jack O'Neill tag and over 700 under the MacGyver tag, this just plain sucks.  I want Stargate fans in particular to have the ability to page back through just the Jack items.  And the early years of the gallery (wow, does it feel weird to say that or what?) have some items that I like to think of as, well, classics.

So (rather than whinging and whining about how Ebil and Feeble LJ is), I've decided to Expand my Online Empire, bwahaha.  I present to you:

http://icanhastofu.tumblr.com/

(The name 'lolmac' is already taken on Tumblr, by a crazy Filipino.)

I'll use this to post, or repost, the best of the older LOLs -- I've already found out that each one can be set up with a 'click-through' link, which will take you to the original LOLMac in situ, with its mouseover text and comment thread and crackfic where applicable.  Also, the tagging system on Tumblr seems to be very robust, and I could definitely use improvement in that area!  The layouts are nice and clean, and there's an RSS feed option, for anyone into that.  And this gives me the opportunity to pretend that some of the, ah, less inspired LOLMacs never happened.

I have a dozen up there already, all from 2007 -- anyone wanna look at them so they don't feel lonely?

Next time there's a persistent problem with LJ, I'm just going to Google 'Russia politics elections'.

Tomorrow, Sunday, are the Russian parliamentary elections.  Putin is setting himself up for the presidency again.  So, like wasps after a picnic fruit salad, LJ gets another round of attacks.  Gah.

I'm hoping it eases up after tomorrow, anyway.

Like everyone else, I'm very tired of the constant attacks.  At the same time, I also appreciate the fact that LiveJournal is standing up for free speech, in a staggeringly hostile environment, against intractable entrenched enemies with deep pockets and almost limitless resources.*  That takes guts.  Every time I start to feel pissy about my fannishness being inconvenienced, I remember that the world doesn't actually revolve around me, and that people in other countries risk their lives for what I tend to take for granted.

But still.  Damn it, my fannishness is being inconvenienced.  Harrumph.

And even better:

I'll even overlook the assumption in the Atlantic article that the family alpha-geek is male by default.  This year.  Next year, Atlantic, get it right.  That should be "Be a good geek", not "Be a good boy".  Got it?  Because I am the IT Guy, and I Can Kill You With My Brain.
